Dr. Spock

I heard on the radio today that before Dr. Spock died he admitted he was responsible for a generation of brats. I tried to find the quote on line but only found a few statements about it made by regular people. Even though I agree he was responsible for a generation of brats I would hate to think he had to live with the knowledge of being the cause. It is hard enough to raise your own kids, imagine feeling responsible for a generation of brats. It surprises me because Vulcans are usually smarter than this. :)

I found the article you were referring to!

On permissive behavior - by Dr. Benjamin Spock, baby care specialist and Vietnam War objector. He now says, "We have reared a generation of brats. Parents aren't firm enough with their children for fear of losing their love or incurring their resentment. This is a cruel deprivation that we professionals have imposed on mothers and fathers. Of course, we did it with the best of intentions. We didn't realize until it was too late how our know-it-all attitude was undermining the self assurance of parents."

I completely agree! Christ-centered parenting always wins over child-centered parenting. Child-centered parenting raises self-indulgent "me" seekers that aren't eternally focused. When children are raised as the focus of the family, everyone loses.
